Advice For Backpackers Going To Europe

Backpack in hand, you are ready to head to Europe for some fun and sun. Here is some advice for backpackers from someone who has done it multiple times and made the mistakes.

Advice For Backpackers Going To Europe

In my personal opinion, spending a few weeks or months backpacking in Europe should be a mandatory task for every person. Admittedly, it can’t really be called a task since you will love every minute of it. Having backpacked Europe more times than I can count, here are some of the lessons I learned which can help you.

The first piece of advice is to limit the number of things you take. Europe is not located on a far away planet. If you can buy it here, you can buy it there. This includes items such as soap, socks, toothpaste, disposable digital cameras and guidebooks. I guarantee that you will take too much junk with you. Don’t. One or two pairs of shoes, shorts, one pair of slacks [to get into museums and churches] and a couple shirts is all you need. If you need anything else, you can just buy it there.

Discovering Volcanic Lanzarote

The Canary Islands take their name from the latin for canine, canus.  Rather than having any connection with canary birds.  But either way these seven Spanish islands are just a short flight from Northern Europe – and provide a cheap and chirpy holiday destination for anyone seeking to enjoy some winter sun on a budget.

The islands are all Spanish owned despite the fact that they are located much closer to Africa than Europe.  And have a culture that is a real melting pot of different influences as a result.

Because they are only four hours from mainland Europe the Canaries are very popular with holidaymakers – during both the summer and winter months.  Yet not all of the islands have surrendered totally to tourism – with little Lanzarote at the eastern end of the chain still retaining plenty of its original character and identity intact.

Holidays in Lanzarote feature in the travel brochures of all of the large tour operators, such as Tui and Thomas Cook.  With everything from all inclusive holidays to short weekend breaks available.

The best accommodation in Lanzarote can be found in the two largest resorts of Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen.  Which enjoy a more sheltered aspect than their other resort rival of Costa Teguise to the north.

Over the last decade Playa Blanca has emerged as the second most popular destination on Lanzarote.  Thanks to the fact that it enjoys some of the best weather the island can offer whilst also boasting some fantastic beaches.  Such as Playa Dorada and Playas del Papagayo.

As a result demand for villas in Playa Blanca has increased dramatically over that time.  With plenty of investors buying properties here to rent out to holidaymakers.  With prices that start at around £400 per week – depending of course on the property and the time of the year.

Playa Blanca is located around forty minutes from the airport at Arrecife.  But on the plus side is the closest resort to Lanzarote´s main tourist attraction.  The dramatic scenery of the Timanfaya National Park – which is home to around 300 now dormant volcanoes.

A tour of the Park and its surreal scenery never fails to impress as this region occupies around 200km square of the islands interior and stands testament to the blistering destructive power of Mother Nature.  The Timanafaya National Park is open every day from 10am to 6pm and admission costs €8 for adults and €4 for children.
